- Description: Airline moved you to a flight days later? Under EU261 you choose: the earliest re-routing, a date you pick, or a refund. Here is what to say and do now.

> **Short answer:** Usually you do not have to accept it. After a cancellation, EU261 lets you choose. Take re-routing at the earliest opportunity, a later date you pick, or a refund within 7 days. If a sooner comparable flight exists, ask for it by number. While you wait, the airline owes you meals and a hotel.

The app says your new flight is on Thursday. It is Monday night. That new booking is the airline's pick. Under EU261, the choice belongs to you. Here is how to use it.

## Do this now

1. **Do not tap "accept" yet.** Check whether the offer is a flight, a voucher, or a refund.
2. **Screenshot everything:** the cancellation message, the new booking, and the departure board.
3. **Search sooner flights yourself.** Check the same airline, other airlines and nearby airports. Note flight numbers.
4. **Queue at the desk and open the airline chat at the same time.** Whoever answers first takes your request.
5. **Ask for the sooner flight by number.** Get any refusal in writing or as a screenshot.
6. **If you must wait, ask for a hotel and meals** for every night until you fly.

## What to say at the desk

> "My flight \[number\] was cancelled and I was moved to \[date\]. I do not accept this date. Under EU Regulation 261/2004 I choose re-routing to my final destination at the earliest opportunity, under comparable conditions. Flight \[number\] leaves \[today\]. Please request a seat for me on it, or give me your refusal in writing."

Then stop and wait. A flight number turns a debate into a yes or no. More lines for hotels, meals and vouchers: what to say at the airline desk.

## Your three choices

| Choice | What you get | Pick it when |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------- |
| Earliest re-routing | The next comparable way to your final destination | You must arrive soon |
| Later date you choose | A date that suits you, if seats exist | Days later actually works for you |
| Refund | Ticket money back within 7 days, plus a flight back to your origin if relevant | The trip no longer makes sense |

The airline's automatic date is not on this list. It only counts if it really is the earliest option, or if you choose it. Torn between options? Read [refund or rebooking: which to pick](https://www.sosflights.help/blog/flight-cancelled-refund-or-rebooking/).

## Can I refuse a rebooked flight the next day?

You can refuse it and ask for something sooner. The standard is "earliest opportunity", not "the airline's next convenient seat".

Be realistic, though. If nothing comparable flies tonight, the next day may truly be the earliest option. Then take it, and ask for a hotel, transport and meals. Those are owed even when the cause was bad weather or air traffic control. See [stranded at the airport overnight?](https://www.sosflights.help/blog/stranded-at-airport-overnight/)

## The airline rebooked me two days later. What are my rights?

Three rights work together:

- **Re-routing at the earliest opportunity.** Show the agent a sooner flight. Ask for a seat on it.
- **Care while you wait.** Meals, two calls or messages, a hotel for each night, and transport to the hotel.
- **A refund instead.** If two days ruins the trip, you can drop it and get your ticket money back.

No desk and no vouchers? Book a reasonable hotel and meals yourself. Keep every receipt and claim the costs back later. The basics are in [flight cancelled? what to do in the next 30 minutes](https://www.sosflights.help/blog/flight-cancelled-what-to-do/).

## Can I book another flight myself and claim it back?

Sometimes, but treat it as a risk, not a plan. It works best when the airline refuses a reasonable re-routing. Before you buy:

1. Get the refusal in writing, or screenshot the chat.
2. Choose a comparable, reasonable fare. Not first class.
3. Keep the receipt and the booking confirmation.

## The airline moved me to a later flight weeks before the trip

The email came early, and your new flight is days later. The choice still applies. You can take the new date, pick another one, or take a refund.

Notice time changes compensation, not your choice. A cancellation notified 14 days or more before departure gives no compensation. Shorter notice can. If your flight moved earlier by more than 1 hour, that counts as a cancellation too. ## Watch out for the voucher button

Some offers come with a voucher next to the new date. Accepting a voucher can end your refund claim. Read every line before you click. More: airline offered a voucher instead of a refund?

## Compensation is homework for next week

Arriving days late after a cancellation can mean compensation. It is €250, €400 or €600 per passenger under EU261, by distance. In the UK it is £220, £350 or £520\. It can be halved if the re-routing still lands close to your original time.

The airline can refuse when the cause was truly extraordinary, like a storm or air traffic control limits. Technical problems and strikes by the airline's own staff are usually not extraordinary. Ask for the reason in writing now. Claim later, yourself, for free.

## FAQ

**Do I have to accept a flight the airline rebooked me on days later?** No. Under EU261 you choose re-routing at the earliest opportunity, a later date of your choice, or a refund. Ask for a sooner flight by number.

**Can I refuse a rebooked flight the next day?** Yes, if a sooner comparable flight exists. If nothing flies earlier, the next day may be the earliest option. Then ask for a hotel and meals.

**Does the airline pay for my hotel while I wait for the new flight?** Yes, under EU261, for each night you must stay. It also pays transport to the hotel and meals. This applies even with bad weather.

**Can the airline put me on another airline's flight?** You can ask for it. The rule is re-routing at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions. Give the flight number and get any refusal in writing.

**I would rather cancel the trip. Can I get my money back?** Yes. After a cancellation you can choose a refund instead. It is due within 7 days. Do not accept a voucher if you want cash.
