- Description: Flight cancelled and the airline won't reroute you? You may buy a new ticket and claim it back, but only after a refusal, at a fair price, with receipts.

> **Short answer:** Ask your airline first. In the EU it must re-route you at the earliest opportunity, even on another airline. Buy your own ticket only if it refuses or offers nothing reasonable. Get that refusal in writing, pick a comparable fare, and keep every receipt. Getting the money back is possible, not certain.

Your flight is cancelled. The airline offers a seat in three days, or nothing at all. Another airline flies tonight. You are tempted to just buy it. Stop for five minutes first. Those five minutes decide whether you get that money back.

## Do this now

1. **Ask the airline to re-route you on the other flight.** Give the exact flight number and time. Ask at the desk and in the app or chat at the same time.
2. **Get the answer on record.** A screenshot of the chat, an email, or the agent's name and the time.
3. **Screenshot the alternatives.** Show the other flight, its price, and that it is the earliest sensible option.
4. **Photograph the departure board** and save the cancellation SMS or email.
5. **Only then, if refused, buy a comparable ticket.** Economy if you flew economy. No upgrades.
6. **Keep every receipt** for the ticket, food, taxi and hotel. Send the claim after the trip.

## What to say at the desk

> "My flight is cancelled. Under Article 8 of EU Regulation 261/2004, I ask to be re-routed at the earliest opportunity. Flight \[number\] on \[airline\] leaves at \[time\] and has seats. Please book me on it. If you cannot, please give me the refusal in writing. Then I will buy a comparable ticket and claim the cost back."

Say it calmly and once. Then write down the agent's name and the time. More ready-made lines: what to say at the airline desk.

## The self-buy gate: three conditions before you pay

Buying your own ticket is a fallback, not a first move. Treat it as a gate with three locks. Open all three before you pay.

| Condition | What it means | Proof to keep |
| ------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1\. Refusal on record | The airline said no, offered only a much later flight, or never answered. | Chat screenshot, email, agent name and time, unanswered call log. |
| 2\. Reasonable, comparable fare | Same cabin, same route or a sensible nearby airport, the earliest flight. | Screenshot of the fare and of cheaper options you checked. |
| 3\. Receipts | Proof you actually paid, and how much. | Ticket receipt, card statement, booking email. |

Miss one lock and the airline has an easy reason to refuse. With all three, you have a strong, documented claim. It can still be disputed.

## Can I book another flight myself and get reimbursed?

Sometimes. The law gives you a right to re-routing at the earliest opportunity, under comparable conditions. That can include another airline or a nearby airport.

The law does not say "buy your own ticket and send us the bill". Your claim rests on one point: the airline failed to re-route you. That is why the refusal on record matters so much.

So the honest answer is: possible, not promised. The airline can dispute your claim. Good evidence is your best answer.

## Airline won't rebook me on another airline. What now?

First, be precise. "Can you put me on something sooner?" is easy to refuse. "Please book me on flight X at 19:40" is harder.

If the agent still says no, ask why. Ask for the answer in writing. A "no" in the app chat counts. So does an email.

If you cannot reach anyone, that is evidence too. Screenshot the queue, the hold time, and the unanswered chat. Read how to reach the airline fast.

## The airline offered a flight days later. Can I refuse and buy my own?

You can say no to a much later flight. Your right is to re-routing at the earliest opportunity. If a sensible flight leaves tonight, ask for it by number.

Refusing a later offer and buying a ticket is the riskiest version of the self-buy. Pass all three gate conditions first. Details: [rebooked days later? you can say no](https://www.sosflights.help/blog/airline-rebooked-me-days-later/).

## Will the airline pay for my new ticket? What changes the answer

These points make a claim stronger or weaker.

- **Stronger:** a written refusal, the earliest flight, an ordinary economy fare, a quick claim.
- **Weaker:** you bought before asking, chose business class, ignored a cheaper similar flight, or lost the receipt.
- **A voucher:** accepting one can end your refund claim. Read before you click.
- **Separate tickets:** the second airline owes nothing for a connection missed because of the first. Each ticket is its own contract.

## Food and a hotel are separate and owed

Care is a different right. While you wait, the airline owes meals and two calls or emails. It also owes a hotel with transport if you stay overnight.

This care is owed even when the cause is extraordinary, like weather or air traffic control. If the airline gives none, book reasonable meals and a hotel yourself. Keep the receipts and claim them back.

## Your evidence locker

Put everything in one folder tonight. You will not remember the details next week.

- Departure board photo and cancellation message.
- The refusal: screenshot, email, or agent name and time.
- Screenshots of the alternatives and their prices.
- Every receipt: ticket, meals, transport, hotel.
- The reason for the cancellation, asked for in writing.

Airlines must also hand you a written notice of your rights after a cancellation. Ask for it and keep it. Full checklist: what proof you need after a disruption.

## Compensation is homework for next week

Reimbursement for a new ticket and compensation are two different things. Compensation is a fixed sum of €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, by distance.

It depends on the notice you got and on the cause. Technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff are usually not extraordinary. You can claim it yourself for free later. Claim firms typically keep 25–35%.

## FAQ

**Can I book another airline if my flight is cancelled?** You can, but ask your airline first. It must re-route you at the earliest opportunity, which can include another airline.

**Will the airline reimburse a ticket I bought myself?** Possibly, not certainly. Your claim is strongest with a refusal on record, a comparable fare and full receipts.

**What counts as a reasonable fare?** The earliest sensible flight in the same cabin you booked. Upgrades and pricier options when cheaper ones existed are likely to be refused.

**What if the airline never answered me?** Document every attempt with screenshots and times. An unanswered chat or call log supports your claim that no re-routing was offered.

**Should I take a refund before buying a new ticket?** Think first. Refund and re-routing are different choices under EU261\. A voucher can also end your refund claim. Read the terms.

**Does the self-buy rule apply to separate tickets?** No. On separate tickets, the second airline owes nothing for a missed connection caused by the first.
