Stranded at the airport overnight? What the airline owes you
Short answer: On a flight from the EU, the airline owes you a hotel, transport and meals for an overnight wait. This applies even in storms or air traffic control chaos. If nobody helps, book a reasonable hotel yourself. Keep every receipt and claim the cost back later.

Your flight is gone and the next one leaves tomorrow. The desk queue is long and the shops are closing. You need a bed, food and a charged phone. Here is how to get all three tonight.

Do this now

  1. Get a new flight first. Queue at the desk and call or chat the airline at the same time. Whoever answers first rebooks you.
  2. Ask for a hotel, transport and meal vouchers. Ask clearly, by name, at the desk.
  3. Screenshot everything. The departure board, the cancellation or delay message, and the app status.
  4. No answer within a reasonable time? Book a reasonable hotel yourself. Note the time and the people you asked.
  5. Keep every receipt. Hotel, taxi or shuttle, dinner, breakfast, phone. Paper or photo.
  6. Charge your phone and set two alarms. Your new flight may leave early.

If you still have no new flight, start with what to do when your flight is cancelled.

What to say at the desk

"I have to stay overnight because of this cancellation. Under Article 9 of EU Regulation 261/2004, I am asking for a hotel, hotel transport and meal vouchers. If you cannot arrange it, please confirm in writing. Then I will book a reasonable hotel and claim it back."

Write down the agent's name and the time. If they refuse, say thank you and act. A refusal does not cancel your right.

What the airline owes you tonight

What Owed? Tip
Hotel Yes, if you must stay overnight Ask first. Self-book only if no help.
Airport–hotel transport Yes Shuttle, bus or taxi. Keep the receipt.
Meals and drinks Yes, in relation to the wait Dinner and breakfast are normal for a night.
Two calls or emails Yes Useful if your phone is dead.
Compensation Maybe, later Not owed in extraordinary circumstances.

Care starts after 2 hours on flights up to 1,500 km. It starts after 3 hours on mid-length flights and after 4 hours on long ones. For an overnight stop, these limits are almost always passed. Full timeline: what you can ask for at 2, 3 and 5 hours.

Stuck at the airport overnight: does bad weather change anything?

Not for care. The EU Court of Justice confirmed this in the McDonagh case. The airline owes food and a bed even when the cause is extraordinary. Storms, snow and air traffic control limits all count.

What changes is compensation. The airline can refuse the fixed payment if the cause was truly outside its control. That is a question for next week. Tonight, you are owed a room.

Flight cancelled and no hotel: can I book one myself?

Yes. If the airline gives no hotel, book one yourself and claim it back. The law says you can recover reasonable, necessary costs. Receipts are your proof.

"Reasonable" means comparable, not luxury. Think of a standard room near the airport, at a normal price for that night. A five-star suite or a spa is likely to be refused. A minibar bill will be too.

Quick choices that usually hold up:

  • Airport hotel: best for an early flight. You save time and taxi costs.
  • City hotel: fine if the airport hotels are full. Take the cheapest sensible transport.
  • Lounge or day room: an option if you only have a few hours. Ask the desk if they can arrange one first.

Airline won't give hotel: what now?

Stay polite and stay firm. Ask once more, then document the refusal. A screenshot of an empty desk or an unanswered chat helps too.

Then book, eat and sleep. Keep the receipts for the hotel, transport and meals in one folder. Send your claim to the airline after the trip. Can't reach anyone at all? Read airline not answering: 7 ways to reach a human.

Should I stay airside or go landside?

If you are airside, ask the desk before leaving the secure area. Leaving may mean passport control and security again in the morning. Some travellers cannot enter the country without a visa. In that case, ask the airline to arrange care airside.

If you go landside, check your bag. Ask whether it stays in the system or comes back to you. Take medicine, chargers and a change of clothes either way.

Overnight with kids or low battery

With children, say so at the start of the queue. Ask for a room first, before the hotels fill up. Keep receipts for nappies, baby food and snacks too. Read flight cancelled with kids: what to ask for first.

For your phone, find a charging point early. Use battery saver. Your boarding pass and rebooking messages live on that screen.

Flying in the US? There is no federal rule for meals or hotels. Each airline sets its own commitments, shown on the DOT dashboard.

Compensation is homework for next week

If the cause was not extraordinary, you may also be owed €250, €400 or €600 per passenger. The amount depends on distance. Tonight, focus on the bed and the next flight. Food vouchers are covered in when the airline must give you food.

FAQ

Does the airline have to pay for my hotel if I am stranded overnight? Yes, under EU261, if you must stay overnight. It also owes transport between the airport and the hotel, plus meals.

Do I get a hotel if the delay was caused by weather? Yes. Care is owed even in extraordinary circumstances like storms or air traffic control limits. Compensation may not be.

Can I book my own hotel and get the money back? Yes, if the airline does not provide one. Choose a reasonable hotel, keep every receipt, and claim the cost afterwards.

What counts as a reasonable hotel? A standard, comparable room near the airport or city. Luxury hotels, spa extras and minibar bills are likely to be refused.

Should I sleep at the airport or go to a hotel? You are entitled to a hotel when you must stay overnight. Sleeping at the gate is your choice, not the airline's.

What if I can't leave the airside area? Tell the desk at once. Ask the airline to arrange food and rest airside, and keep any receipts.
